Project Genie is Google's experimental web app for creating and exploring interactive worlds with its Genie world models. A world model generates each frame as you move instead of running a game engine. Google launched it on January 29, 2026, for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US aged 18 and over, powered by Genie 3 along with Nano Banana Pro and Gemini, according to Google's announcement.
You sketch a world from text and generated or uploaded images, choose a first- or third-person view, then walk through it while the model generates the path ahead. You can remix other worlds and download videos. On May 19, 2026, Google said it was rolling Project Genie out to eligible Ultra subscribers worldwide and adding worlds based on US Street View locations. Google's plans page now says it is available in more than 140 countries, only with Google AI Ultra, which starts at $99.99 a month in the US.
Google DeepMind announced Genie 4 on October 27, 2026, with native audio and text edits to a running world (our story). It is in a research preview for trusted testers and, DeepMind says, coming soon to Ultra subscribers in Project Genie.
For game developers, Project Genie works as a sketchpad. Google's launch limits included 60-second generations, loose prompt and physics adherence, and hard-to-control characters, and it exports video only. As AIGamer's AI game engines guide puts it, plan to rebuild any idea in a real engine. AIGamer hasn't tested Project Genie.
