How to turn an AI picture into a rigged 3D game asset in 5 steps
Picture, mesh, refine, rig, export: how 3D AI Studio's templates, Tripo, Hi3D and anymove fit together, and where each step needs checking before the next.
Key points
- Generate one object on a plain background and check the picture before paying for a 3D step.
- Hi3D refines geometry only and rescales its output, so restore size and textures afterwards.
- Check polygon count, scale and pivot before importing any generated mesh into your engine.
Making a 3D game asset with AI rarely works as one prompt. 3D AI Studio's Templates update of October 28, reported by MakeGameWithAI, and the public docs for Hi3D and anymove each cover part of the same chain: picture, rough mesh, refined mesh, rig and animation, then export.
The 5 steps
1. Picture
An image model draws a single object first. 3D AI Studio's Low-Poly Prop template page says its image step isolates the object on white so the 3D step "sees one clear shape." Its changelog says you can approve that picture, or redo it, before the 3D step.
2. Mesh
Image-to-3D turns the picture into a textured mesh; the template uses Tripo P2, which the page describes as made for low-poly topology. If one view isn't enough, Tripo's official Python SDK has a multi-view mode: a front view, plus optional left, back and right views.
3. Refine
Hi3D v1.0 (open weights, October 23) rebuilds a rough mesh at higher resolution, guided by a picture of that object, up to a 1536ยณ sparse grid (see our story "Hi3D releases v1.0 open weights to refine rough meshes into high-res geometry"). Its model card says output is geometry only, recentered and rescaled, so restore size and textures afterwards.
4. Rig and animate
anymove, open-source (Apache-2.0) from Patch (@patch_gg), covers this; see "anymove extracts game-ready creature animation from a single AI-generated video." Its README, which credits the two-camera method to @CanItCode, takes a dragon from a FLUX 3 picture and a $0.40 Tripo H3.1 mesh to a 42-bone skeleton placed by hand and skinned in Blender. A video model animates renders of that creature, front and side in one frame; a joint reader trained on it finds each joint in both views, and the rig is fitted and exported as a 24 fps GLB, with fitting under a minute a clip.
5. Export
According to 3D AI Studio's changelog, its presets for Unity, Unreal / UEFN, Godot, Roblox Studio and Blender choose file format, texture size and polygon budget and move the pivot to the base. Free credits let you run a template and view the result; downloads need a paid plan.
Scenario published 1,342 example AI-generated 3D assets, with prompts, settings and inputs, on Hugging Face on October 19, under CC BY 4.0. A gated set of 393 Hunyuan-made examples falls mostly under Tencent licenses that don't apply in the EU, UK or South Korea, and none may be used for AI training.
Why it matters
Splitting the job into stages gives you a file to inspect after each one, so you can drop a bad picture before paying for a mesh, and fix a mesh before rigging it.
Limits and caveats
Mistakes carry forward. Hi3D's card warns severe errors in a rough mesh can persist, and its top setting is validated only on a 96 GB NVIDIA GPU. anymove needs an NVIDIA GPU with CUDA (24 GB to train its joint reader), and its README says eight-legged walking and lying-down poses don't fit. AIGamer hasn't tested the full chain.
How to try it
- Pick one prop and generate a clean front view on a plain background.
- Run it through an image-to-3D tool, then check polygon count, scale and pivot before importing.
- Add refinement and rigging only once those steps hold up.
