Comparison
Claude Code vs Cursor for game development (2026)
One is an agent, the other an editor, and since October 12, 2026 Cursor is sold in a bundle with Grok and X. What that means for Unity, Godot and browser games.

Cursor is a code editor with agents built in, for people who want to read and change the code themselves while an AI helps. Claude Code is an agent you hand tasks to from a terminal, editor, desktop app or browser, and it's one of the agents Unity's official plugin supports. They also combine: Anthropic's docs link a Claude Code extension for Cursor. AIGamer hasn't tested either tool hands-on; this page is based on each company's documentation and pricing as of October 29, 2026.
The short version
- Claude Code suits you if you already pay for Claude, work in Unity 6 and want Unity's official plugin, or want an agent that works the same way in a terminal, editor, desktop app and browser.
- Cursor suits you if you want a full code editor with agents built in, want a free or $8 starting point, and are fine using only Grok models unless you pay $30 a month or more and buy other models' usage separately.
How they differ for game development
How you work with it
Cursor's download page offers a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, a command-line agent installed with a script, and agents that run in the cloud and can be started from a browser, a phone or tools such as Slack and GitHub. Cursor's pricing page lists cloud agents from the $30 Premium plan up.
Claude Code is an agent first. Anthropic's documentation lists a terminal CLI, VS Code and JetBrains extensions, a desktop app and a web version, and the VS Code section has an install link for Cursor as well. Project rules go in a CLAUDE.md file that's read at the start of every session.
Engines and platforms
Both can write code for any engine or web stack; the add-ons differ. Unity's documentation says its official plugin, which needs Unity 6.0 or later, works with Claude Code, Codex and Grok; Cursor isn't named. For Unreal, the Ultimate Engine CoPilot FAQ lists Claude Code among the coding agents it can use, and says MCP clients such as Cursor can use the plugin's tools through its MCP server. For Godot, the godot-mcp README has setup steps for both, so either can launch the editor, run the game and read debug output. Meshy's homepage says its MCP server, for generating 3D models from an agent, works with Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Pricing and limits (October 2026)
Anthropic's pricing page lists Claude Code on every paid Claude plan, from Pro at $20 a month ($17 billed annually) to Max from $100 a month, but not on the free plan.
Cursor's pricing changed on October 12, 2026, when The X Subscription was announced on x.ai, putting Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium in one plan. Cursor's pricing page now lists a free plan with limited agent use; Plus at $8 a month, with Grok models only; and Premium ($30), Super ($100) and Ultra ($200), with 4, 15 and 50 times Plus's usage. That usage pool is shared between Cursor and Grok. From Premium up, models from other companies can be used in Cursor, but they aren't covered by the plan: the page says they are billed separately at API list prices. In a staff post on Cursor's forum, the company said existing Cursor subscribers can keep their plan, and their included third-party usage continues until they switch. Separately, Cursor said in an August 14, 2026 blog post that SpaceX had acquired it.
What it's good at for games
On February 22, 2025, Pieter Levels (@levelsio) posted on X that he had asked Cursor to "make a 3d flying game in browser with skyscrapers," which became his flight simulator, written in plain HTML and JavaScript. Cursor was also the top-tier (Diamond) sponsor of the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026, according to the jam's press page. For Claude Code, frederik (@froessell) wrote on X on October 20, 2026 that it built most of his Unity 6 game Mowtopia in two days.
Limits
Neither tool can tell whether your game is fun, so play it after each change, as our vibe coding guide recommends. Claude Code isn't on Claude's free plan. On Cursor, non-Grok models cost extra on top of the subscription, and the free and $8 plans don't offer them.
Which to choose
If you work in Unity 6 and want Unity's own skills, Claude Code is the one of the two that Unity's plugin documents. If you prefer to stay in an editor and review every line, Cursor is built around that, and staying with Grok models keeps the cost to the plan price. If you want Anthropic's models inside an editor without paying per use, Anthropic's documented route is a Claude plan with the Claude Code extension in Cursor or VS Code.
FAQ
Is Claude Code better than Cursor for game development?
AIGamer hasn't tested them side by side. They suit different ways of working: Cursor is an editor you work in, Claude Code is an agent you hand tasks to. Unity's official plugin supports Claude Code and doesn't list Cursor.
Can I use non-Grok models in Cursor in 2026?
On Premium ($30 a month) and above, Cursor's pricing page says third-party models are available, billed separately at API list prices. The $8 Plus plan offers only Grok models, and the free plan doesn't include third-party models. The pricing page doesn't name which third-party models are offered.
Can I run Claude Code inside Cursor?
Yes. Anthropic's Claude Code docs include an install link for Cursor alongside VS Code. You'd need a paid Claude plan or an Anthropic Console account for Claude Code itself.
Who owns Cursor now?
Cursor said in an August 14, 2026 blog post that SpaceX had acquired it, completing a process that began with a partnership announced in April.
