Codex vs Cursor for game development (2026)

Both start free and both have an $8 plan, but they get you different things. Codex works with Unity's official plugin; Cursor is a full editor now sold with Grok and X.

Codex is an agent included with ChatGPT plans, and it's one of the agents Unity's official plugin supports. Cursor is a code editor with agents built in, now sold in a bundle with Grok and X, and its free and $8 plans don't include models from other companies. The two also combine: OpenAI's Codex extension installs in Cursor. AIGamer hasn't tested either tool hands-on; this comparison uses each company's documentation and pricing pages as of October 29, 2026.

The short version

  • OpenAI Codex suits you if you have a ChatGPT plan, use Unity's plugin in Unity 6 or Ultimate Engine CoPilot in Unreal, or want a command-line agent that is open source.
  • Cursor suits you if you want to work in a full editor and see each change as it happens, and are fine with Grok models unless you pay extra for others.

How they differ for game development

How you work with it

Codex is an agent you can reach several ways. OpenAI's docs describe a CLI that inspects code, makes changes and runs commands in your terminal; an extension for VS Code and compatible editors, Cursor and Windsurf included; the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux; and cloud tasks. The CLI is open source under the Apache-2.0 license, according to the openai/codex GitHub repository.

Cursor's download page offers a desktop editor for macOS, Windows and Linux, a command-line agent and cloud agents you can start from a browser or phone; its pricing page lists cloud agents from the $30 Premium plan up. You read and edit the code in the same window the agent works in.

Engines and platforms

Unity's documentation says its official plugin, which needs Unity 6.0 or later, works with Claude Code, Codex and Grok. Cursor isn't on that list. For Unreal, the Ultimate Engine CoPilot FAQ lists Codex among the coding agents it can use, and says MCP clients such as Cursor can use the plugin's tools through its MCP server. For Godot, the godot-mcp README has named setup steps for Cursor (and Claude Code and Cline) but not Codex, though it gives a general configuration for any MCP client. Meshy's homepage says its MCP server, for generating 3D models from an agent, works with both.

Pricing and limits (October 2026)

Both have a free plan and an $8 plan, but they cover different things. OpenAI's pricing page says Codex is included in every ChatGPT plan; on Free and Go ($8 a month) it's available only in the desktop app, subject to rollout. Plus ($20 a month) adds Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS, and Pro starts at $100 a month. An API key also works with the CLI and IDE extension, billed at API rates.

Cursor's pricing changed on October 12, 2026, when The X Subscription was announced on x.ai, putting Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium in one plan. Cursor's pricing page lists a free plan with limited agent use, Plus at $8 a month with Grok models only, and Premium ($30), Super ($100) and Ultra ($200), which add cloud agents and access to other companies' models. Those models aren't covered by the plan price: they are billed separately at API list prices. Cursor said in an August 14, 2026 blog post that SpaceX had acquired it.

What it's good at for games

Frederik (@froessell) wrote on X on October 20, 2026 that he used Codex to build 2048 Meadow and some of his other apps. For Cursor, Pieter Levels (@levelsio) posted on February 22, 2025 that he'd asked it for a 3D flying game in the browser, which became his flight simulator. Cursor was also the top-tier (Diamond) sponsor of the Cursor Vibe Jam 2026, according to the jam's press page.

Limits

Neither tool can tell whether a game feels good; our vibe coding guide covers why playing the game after each change matters. Codex's Free and Go plans leave out the CLI and editor extension. Cursor's free and $8 plans leave out non-Grok models, and on higher plans those models cost extra.

Which to choose

Start with what you already pay for. A ChatGPT plan includes Codex, and a staff post on Cursor's forum says existing Cursor, SuperGrok and X Premium subscribers are being offered a switch to the new bundle. Codex is the documented option for Unity's plugin and the one with an open-source CLI, and its usage comes out of your ChatGPT plan's limits. Cursor fits an editor-first workflow, and staying with Grok models keeps the cost to the plan price. If you want both, the Codex extension runs inside Cursor.

FAQ

Is Codex or Cursor better for making games?

AIGamer hasn't compared them hands-on. Both can write code for any engine or web stack. Unity's official plugin supports Codex; the godot-mcp README has named setup steps for Cursor.

Can I use Codex inside Cursor?

Yes. OpenAI's docs say the Codex IDE extension works in VS Code and compatible editors, naming Cursor and Windsurf.

Which is cheaper, Codex or Cursor?

Both start at $0 and have an $8 plan. Codex's CLI and editor extension start with ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month; in Cursor, models other than Grok start with Premium at $30 a month plus usage at API prices.

Is Codex open source?

The command-line agent is. The openai/codex repository on GitHub, which describes the project as a lightweight coding agent for your terminal, uses the Apache-2.0 license.
