Summary

Thousand Lives (千世书) is a free, open-source text life simulator that runs in a web browser, made by GitHub user rockbenben and released under the MIT license. According to the project's README on GitHub, it has 10 settings, each with its own stats, events and endings: among them an immortal-cultivation story, a spy drama in 1940 Shanghai, survival after a virus outbreak, a generation ship bound for a star system 30 light-years away and the life of an opera performer in Republican-era China. A turn pairs a full-screen illustration with a short passage of story and a few options to pick from. The numbers behind your character decide which events come up later, and a run ends when certain stat combinations are reached or the turns run out; the README puts a typical game at about 40 turns. There are 61 achievements and an ending gallery, and the site's home screen counts 388 endings. The game is in Chinese only, with a toggle between Simplified and Traditional characters; the English name appears on the title screen and as the repository name.

How it was made

How it was made: The game has two modes. Local play needs no API key: according to the README, each setting ships with its own pool of hand-written events, so a full game can be finished for free, though playing the same setting several times brings back scenes you've already seen. In AI mode, a large language model writes each turn as it streams in, decides the outcome of actions the player types in, and can generate a whole new setting from a one-line theme. Players bring their own key, choosing from 24 built-in provider presets (DeepSeek, OpenAI, Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini among them) or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and every turn is billed to that key. The README says keys are stored only in the browser and most requests go directly to the provider; five providers that don't accept direct browser requests are routed through a pass-through relay run by the developer. The repository's development docs and art scripts show the game's artwork (2,092 image slots, covering scenes, endings, covers and achievement badges) was rendered from English text prompts by an image-generation model the scripts don't name. The README lists the game as project #015 in the developer's "365 open source plan", which it describes as one person plus AI making more than 300 open-source projects in a year, but it doesn't say which AI tools were used to write the code. AIGamer played the opening turns of local mode at lives.newzone.top on October 31, 2026.
