Matrix-Game is a series of open-source interactive world models from Skywork AI, published on GitHub. The current version, Matrix-Game 4.0, was released on October 15, 2026, according to the project's README, with a technical report on arXiv following on October 20.
Version 4.0 takes a different route from world models that generate everything. A conventional game engine still runs the gameplay, physics and player input, and draws the scene as plain low-poly geometry. A video model then repaints that stream, chunk by chunk, into detailed visuals. The README calls this "streaming neural rendering." The release includes three playable scenes (Medieval Castle and Ancient Egypt shooters, and a City Racing driving game), the game source code, a self-hosted browser demo and model weights on Hugging Face.
The technical report says the system reaches 480p gameplay at 60 FPS on a single RTX 5090, and the README lists up to 67 FPS on an RTX 5080 with fixed prompts and the optional SageAttention backend. These are the authors' own figures; AIGamer has not tested it.
For game developers, the split matters: you can edit maps, NPC behavior and rules in the engine and test them without loading the model, then add the neural renderer on top. It is free and self-hosted, but it is research code that needs Linux and one of four supported NVIDIA GPUs. Matrix-Game 4.0 is Apache-2.0; earlier versions in the same repo use the MIT license.
Limitation: Model inference needs Linux and an NVIDIA GPU; the release ships tuned paths only for A100, RTX 5090, RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti, and the 5080 and 5070 Ti paths support fixed prompts only
FAQ
What is Matrix-Game 4.0?
It is Skywork AI's open-source world model, released October 15, 2026, that turns the low-poly frames of a running game engine into detailed video in real time, while the engine keeps handling gameplay and physics.
Is Matrix-Game free?
Yes. The code and weights are free to download. Matrix-Game 4.0 is under the Apache-2.0 license and earlier versions under MIT, and you run it on your own hardware.
What GPU does Matrix-Game 4.0 need?
The README lists single-GPU inference paths for an NVIDIA A100 80 GB, RTX 5090, RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti, on Linux. The RTX 5080 and 5070 Ti paths support fixed prompts only.
Can I make my own game with Matrix-Game?
The release includes the source of three games that you can edit (terrain, objects, NPC behavior and rules) and test without the model. Model weights are provided only for those three scenes.
