Audio Studio MCP is a free, open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP) server from KanaWorks_AI that lets Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and other MCP clients make music and sound effects locally. MCP is an open standard that lets an AI agent call an application's tools. The project's GitHub README says it runs Stability AI's Stable Audio 3 model through MLX on Apple Silicon Macs or PyTorch on Windows PCs with NVIDIA GPUs, with no cloud service, API key or per-call cost. Linux with an NVIDIA GPU should work, the README says, but it is untested and has no installer.

There are four tools. generate_audio turns a text request into background music, an instrument loop or a sound effect, with one to four takes per call. edit_audio restyles a clip, regenerates a chosen time range or extends it. process_audio trims, loops, fades and sets loudness, then exports WAV, OGG or FLAC, for example an OGG loop for Godot. The fourth frees model memory.

Started with --web, the same server also opens a local browser workbench where you compare takes, select part of a waveform to replace, and export with presets for sound effects, music loops or video. Agents and the page share one loaded model and job queue. It listens only on 127.0.0.1 with no login, so it is meant for one computer only.

The code is MIT-licensed, but the weights fall under the Stability AI Community License: commercial use is allowed if you register with Stability AI and annual revenue stays under $1M; above that you need an enterprise license. Stable Audio 3 makes no vocals. AIGamer hasn't tested it.

FAQ

Is Audio Studio MCP free?

Yes. The code is MIT-licensed and generation runs on your own Mac or PC, so there are no per-call costs or API keys. The model weights are under the Stability AI Community License.

Can I use Audio Studio MCP audio in a commercial game?

Under the Stability AI Community License that covers the Stable Audio 3 weights, yes, if you register with Stability AI for commercial use and you and your affiliates earn under US$1 million a year; above that you need an enterprise license. The license says you own the outputs as between you and Stability AI. Read it before shipping.

What hardware does Audio Studio MCP need?

An Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later, 16 GB RAM recommended) or 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 with an NVIDIA GPU with 8 GB or more of VRAM. Intel Macs and AMD GPUs aren't supported.

Can Audio Studio MCP make songs with vocals?

No. The README says Stable Audio 3 makes instrumental music and sound effects and can't produce intelligible singing or lyrics.
