MCP for game development
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open-source standard for connecting AI apps to outside systems, according to the project's site, which likens it to a USB-C port. Anthropic open-sourced it on November 25, 2024. In practice, an MCP server publishes an app's functions as tools that a coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex can call, and the agent reads back what happened.
For game developers, that means an agent can work inside an engine instead of only editing files. Unreal Engine 5.8 includes an experimental Unreal MCP plugin; Epic's documentation says the server accepts only local connections by default and has no authentication, so it shouldn't be exposed beyond your computer. Unity's AI tools page says its free CLI has a built-in MCP mode and that its official plugin sets up MCP inside Claude Code, Codex and Grok (our story). Roblox says Studio has a built-in MCP server, while Godot relies on community servers such as godot-mcp (engine servers compared).
The same idea reaches assets. KanaWorks_AI's Audio Studio MCP, according to its README, lets Claude Code or any MCP client generate music and sound effects locally on a Mac or Windows PC with Stable Audio 3 (our story). Ludo.ai's new CLI, a command-line tool rather than an MCP server, lets agents such as Claude Code generate sprites, 3D models and audio, GamesBeat reported (our story).
What to watch: Engadget reported that Epic wants MCP to be an integral part of Unreal Engine 6.
