MCP for Blender, previously called Blender MCP, is a free, open-source plugin that connects Blender to AI assistants through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Developer Siddharth Ahuja makes it as a community project, and the GitHub repo states it is not affiliated with the Blender Foundation.
The setup has two halves: an addon that runs a local socket server inside Blender, and a Python MCP server that your AI client talks to. According to the README, a one-line install script configures clients such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code and enables the addon. The assistant does most of its work by writing Blender Python; the plugin adds nine tools around that, including one that runs code in the open scene, a look tool that shows the model the viewport or a render so it can check its result, a scene summary, and asset search across Poly Haven, Sketchfab and Poly Pizza. A generate_3d tool creates and imports a model through Meshy, Tripo, Hunyuan3D or Hyper3D Rodin.
The plugin is MIT licensed. AI generation runs either on your own provider API keys or through optional Premium plans on the project's site, priced from $10 a month as of November 2026. For game developers, it offers a way to rough out props, rooms and materials by prompt while the work stays in a normal .blend file. The package was renamed from blender-mcp to mcp-for-blender, and the README says existing setups keep working. AIGamer has not tested it.

FAQ
Is Blender MCP free?
Yes. The addon and MCP server are open source under the MIT license. The paid Premium plans, from $10 a month as of November 2026, only cover AI 3D generation without your own API keys.
Which AI apps work with Blender MCP?
The README gives setup steps for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, OpenCode and Antigravity, and the project describes it as working with any LLM through MCP.
Is Blender MCP made by the Blender Foundation?
No. It is a third-party community plugin by Siddharth Ahuja, and the project says it is not affiliated with the Blender Foundation.
Why did blender-mcp change its name?
The project is now called MCP for Blender and its PyPI package is mcp-for-blender. The README says setups that still run blender-mcp keep working without config changes; it links an issue explaining the change.
