MCP for Unity (often searched as Unity MCP) is a free, open-source bridge between AI assistants and the Unity Editor, built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It comes from Coplay, which makes a paid Unity AI assistant. Coplay's website now says it has joined Aura, and the project's README says Aura sponsors and maintains the repo. The README states the project is not affiliated with Unity Technologies.
The project's documentation describes three layers: an MCP client such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or VS Code connects to a local Python server, which relays commands to a C# package running inside the Editor. You add the package from a Git URL in Unity's Package Manager (it supports Unity 2021.3 LTS through 6.x) and then use a menu item to configure the AI clients it detects. The README counts 50 tools for scenes, GameObjects, scripts, assets, tests and builds. Since version 10 the tools are sorted into groups: only the core group is on by default, and optional groups add animation, UI, VFX, ProBuilder, testing and AI asset generation. The asset-generation group calls services such as Tripo, Meshy, fal.ai and OpenRouter with your own API keys, and can import models from Sketchfab or from a running Blender session.
It is MIT licensed and free. For game developers, it lets a general coding agent act on an open Unity project instead of only editing files. Version 10.3.0, the latest release, came out on October 4, 2026. AIGamer has not tested it.
Limitation: It needs Python 3.10 or newer (installed through uv) running next to the Editor, and its AI asset-generation tools only work with your own provider API keys
